The holidays can be a difficult time for those of us who are grieving or in pain. Blue Christmas services are traditionally held on the longest day of the year, acknowledging the darkness where we may find ourselves during festivities and decorations at this typically happy time of the year.
Advent, the four weeks before Christmas, is when we are waiting for the Nativity on Christmas Eve, the birth of the Christ Child. We are reminded of a world that waited in deep darkness for the Light of the World to arrive. And we can—in the midst of a typically festive holiday season—acknowledge our own darkness and sorrow before the Lord in a safe setting. You may be grieving the loss of a loved one or the loss of a job, family discord or a divorce, a physical ailment or financial struggle. Now may be a time of waiting, transition or uncertainty. But we can look forward, in our own darkness, to His light coming again.
This service will provide space for any and all of us to acknowledge our personal darkness before the Lord and meet Him in it. Likewise it will provide opportunity to express longing for God’s light in each of our own lives. This sacred service is liturgical and experiential in nature, and includes scripture, music, meditation and remembrance as we wait in hope and certainty for God’s light.
