Why Should We Serve?

In recent years there has been a weakening emphasis, even in the Church, on service to others. Service takes the focus away from self-interest (where the American culture directs our focus). As followers of Christ, Christians are called to invest their time and energy in ways that are congruent with God's purposes (Romans 13:4) for two reasons:

First, because God's command:
"And now, O Israel [God's people], what does the Lord your God ask of you but       to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord       your God with all of your heart…" (Deuteronomy 10:12).

Second, Jesus himself modeled service for us to follow:
"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very       nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped [or       exploited], but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being       made in human likeness" (Philippians 2:5-7).

These two reasons can also be summed up in the two great commandments (Luke 10:27) and the great commission (Matthew 28:19-20).

How Should I Serve?
  • Motivated by obedience (Deuteronomy 13:4)
  • Motivated by gratitude (1 Samuel 12:24)
  • Motivated by gladness (Psalm 100:2)
  • Motivated by forgiveness, not guilt (Isaiah 6:6-8)
  • Motivated by humility (Philippians 2:3)
  • Motivated by love (Galatians 5:13; 2 Corinthians 5:14-15)
Where Should I Serve?

Ephesians 4:12 tells us to equip the saints to do good works; which we strive to practice here at Vineyard Church of Columbus. Some ministries that you can easily get involved in are listed by going to the volunteer page of our website.

Our Volunteer Coordinator, Diane Bauman, also works with people in selecting various ministries in the church that would fit different passions and gifts. Diane can be reached at Diane.Bauman@vineyardcolumbus.org or by phone: 614.890.0000 X3180.
